CSB - Cell & Systems Biology Courses

A&S Cell & Systems Biology Course Descriptions

CSB325H - Endocrine Physiology
Marking Scheme: 2 midterms and 1 final (all MC).

Repeats a lot of what is learned in PSL302. Material is interesting, but a common complaint was that the tests were unfair. Things on the test were completely random, seemingly unimportant details. Class seemed a bit disorganized at times. Text was AWFUL, but I'd still recommend hacking through it to get an A. Overall, the material was interesting, but the lectures were a waste of time; you really need to learn the stuff yourself.

Rating:3/5.

CSB332H - Synapse Neurobiology

Marking Scheme: 30% midterm, 20% quiz thingy, 50% final
I have only gone to maybe 3 classes all year so I don't know much of what is going on. I'm doing extremely well in the class, and Prof Ju seems wonderful. He actually cares about the students and this class is very fair. This class is for my program (the whole pick 2 FCEs from ....), but it is not made for students in neuroscience because it is just too basic. I'm disappointed because it is not about the synapse, it is systems neuroscience and it seems basic at that. I feel like I have not really learned anything and so that is disappointing to me. It should have exclusions (Prof Ju agreed with me) and it should be more about the synapse (Prof Ju again agreed with me). However, I do like that the prof actually cares! Not a hard class, but for me, not rewarding.

CSB346 - Respiration Neurobiology

Marking Scheme: 2 X 15% class assignments on papers, 25% midterm and 45% final.

Peever

  • Um, I like Peever, but I don't like this class too much, however, I think I've been to 3 lectures this term and none since the midterm (haven't even looked at the slides). Seems.. random also. A bit watered-down (I feel like everything is after PSL302, hah). Peever is a nice guy and a good lecturer but the midterm is RANDOM. Although I did well, I do not like to be tested on random names of people.. nice attempt to bring down the average, but perhaps you should teach us more complicated stuff vs. testing us on random knowledge. But it is okay, overall.  I feel like I haven't really learned anything in this class, which is a disappointment for me. There is no theory, there's no.. I don't know, anything. I feel like everyone is just doing studies they know they'll get some result out of and then they'll publish. Peever doesn't seem to be very interested in his own research either.

  • Was alright. Initially I went into this course dreading all the neurorespiratory stuff from PSL302 (well technically PSL303 lol cos I printed the wrong notes for Duffin's section and it scared the shit out of me but then I realized the mistake). I really like the way Peever lectures, he explains everything on a research based level. He'll talk about what some scientists found out and how it lead to the discovery of something, etc. At first this was great, because his first couple of lectures were fairly straightforward (review of PSL302). Then for the material after the first test, it just got a bit annoying with knowing EVERY experiment done and what they found, etc. This course has a lot of potential. The exam was pretty much a ripoff of the past exam, so I guess the hard working student in me was kind of disappointed that I didn't actually get to apply all that studying. I feel as if he asked more concept based questions, and not the nitty gritty stuff, it would have been a better experience (atleast for me). Out of these courses though, CSB would have to be the most interesting to me.

CSB351 - Introductory Virology
Abouhaider

Marking Scheme:  2 midterms, 1 exam worth 30,30,40 (MC and T/F).

  • Good course...other reviews i think says it all. the prof cares about his students a lot and encourages you. Material is very interesting. Give your self about a week to study or more for the tests and exam if u want 4.0.
